Okay art fanatics! October is here and this month for all things halloween art related I am diving into inks! But with so many to choose from which one do you draw with? This month my drawing product of choice for my portrait art is Higgins Black Magic Ink! Why I love it and what artists need to know!
This is Higgins deepest black!! Rich in density this drawing ink almost has a velvety feel when brushed on. Due to the richness and intensity of the black this ink is great for stand alone drawings and illustrations, or used as a top layer when combined with other inks or drawing supplies. When mixed with other Higgins inks it can created muted tones, more so this ink is awesome for shadows!!
Black Magic is compatible with dip pens, brushes, and air brushes. It's very versatile and works well on most surfaces such as paper, board, and film. This is the ideal ink for creating dramatic contrasts, and events such as INKTOBER!! This drawing ink is uber cost effective as well at 7.00 us. Black Magic is water resistant but may smudge if not dried thoroughly! Make sure to shake before use as pigment may settle! My newest comic art inspired portrait of Beetlejuice is being inked with Black Magic on mixed media. Make sure to check out my instagram for more drawing tips! @jessicaarcherartworks
Hello art fanatics!!! I'm so excited to be diving into new artwork with you! This month I am going all things markers line featuring Spectra alcohol based markers and your favourite friendly neighbourhood Spider-man!! Let's get to it!
Spectra markers are part of the Ad Marker (Art and Design) line through Chartpak! Solvent based, Ad Marker was created in 1974 for advertising, fashion illustration and used by many fine artists today! These transparent markers with their distinct nibs and brushstrokes are a feature that goes back to that era of art and design! Spectra markers are alcohol based with low door and non toxic! They have standard ink capacity, are permanent and offer a variety of lines. They also were created with the artist in mind with their "no-roll" barrel design! These drawing markers are air tight making them last longer and budget friendly for ya!
From chisel to brush these drawing supplies offer a variety of lines from wide to fine point! The chisel offers a tri-nib meaning you can go from wide to a fine line with the flick of the wrist! In my latest comic art inspired portrait art of Spider-man, I used the wide brush strokes to fill in the large areas between the webbing and switched to the fine line to colour the nooks and crannies between his webs.
Wether you draw comic art, portrait art, realism or illustrations Spectra markers are made for all artists! These permanent colour art supplies offer different colour scheme sets, offer different brushstrokes, mixed media friendly!
If you're like me and love trying different things with your art supplies you will LOVE these art markers!! Spectra markers work well with other drawing mediums due to their transparency! For this new portrait art of Spidey-I inked him with the Molotow Blackliners with no no ink bleeding! Molotow are also great to use with other drawing supplies due to their quick dry! My artworks are created in a realism style which means I love adding depth, tonal values and details to my portraits! Using the marker colour as base layers you can colour on top of it to create that depth and value. The marker can be used as a highlight or contrast depending on what effect you're going for! ( in this case I suggest using a wax based coloured pencil as the colours are more saturated!)
Here is an example of layers with my new pencil drawing of Spider-man being coloured with Spectra markers! You can see some areas are lighter and some are darker-the more layers you do the more contrasts you create! So you can go from light to dark or dark to light! This also saves a bit more time of layering your coloured pencils! I also left some of the marker as is to create some nice highlights in Spidey's mask! These drawing markers work well with any pourous surfaces (ie. paper, board ec.) but would suggest using a heavyweight paper such as marker paper, Bristol or a mixed media! This way your paper will hold up against the moisture of the marker!
There you have it art fans! The final portrait art of my favourite webslinger drawn with Spectra alcohol based markers, with a mix of ink and coloured pencil! I am loving these drawing supplies and will be doing more artwork with these so make sure to follow my socials, and join my newsletter! I will be offering bookings to do demos one on one! What are you going to create with the Spectra markers?? If you are interested in adding these markers to your studio make sure to use this coupon code to receive 15% off your purchase of $20 or more at the Chartpak shop!

Ok friends here it is!! One of my favourite art supplies for my portrait drawing and comic art-my battery operated eraser!! I know what you must be thinking at first glance..."what is so special about an eraser?" Well-I tell you! It's not just an eraser, I actually use it for drawing! This is quite possibly the best gadget for realism drawing and portrait art! A user friendly tool for any drawing, portrait or comic artist!
Many artists use this tool for erasing, I use this to draw in my comic art and portrait artworks; I'm going to share my secret for using this battery operated eraser for drawing! The Koh-I-Noor battery operated eraser is efficient , easy to control with it's pen like design and responsive! Perfect for detailing this vinyl eraser is nice and soft, works great in small areas or adding highlights! Realism artists use this drawing tool the most as they are great for creating textures like skin, clothing, and even reflections with their clean erasing! Take your pencil drawing to the next level with this super fun gadget!!
These erasers are vinyl and soft allowing me to sand down the nib to a finer point to create textures! These smaller markings help create the appearance of textures like skin, clothing or costume textures as shown in this picture of my latest comic art portrait-Batman! I created very thin fine lines with this eraser in his cowl to help create some stretch of the material. The smaller markings really helped create a thick leathery feel in his mask making a hyperrealistic portrait! Any artist at any level and type of art can have fun with this drawing tool!
This is my secret for my realism portrait and comic art! It's super easy to use, user friendly, cost efficient, and comes with a pack of refills and two batteries!! Refills are always in stock and available on the Chartpak website at all times! As a BONUS- receive 15% when you spend $20 or more on your order!! Use COUPON CODE: JESSICA
Using this eraser to make very distinct markings really helped achieve the look of textures creating a sense of realism! I picture Batman's cowl being made of a thick protective almost leathery material, so there should be a bit of stretch to it. These fine lines and markings added subtle but impactful effects.
Final result!! You can see in the overall portrait art of Batman, how all the markings come together-from beard stubble, to fabric textures. Batman has a realistic quality now, not just a comic book character but rather a real person in a costume. This tool is a must for anyone diving into realism!
Artists alike of all levels use the battery operated eraser by Koh-I-Noor, I will never steer you in the wrong direction with the products I use! Fun and professional tools for everyone!
I love guiding artists and assisting where I can! I have been using Chartpak products for years and can assure you of their quality! Drawing supplies for light sketching, professional artworks or hobby!
My favourite and go to drawing tool for creating realism in my portraits and comic artworks! See how I used this to make Batman come to life and why it will take your pencil drawings to the next level!

Recent drawing using oil based coloured pencils-Polycolors! These pencils come with a vast array of tones, easy to use and great for beginners or advanced artists!
These pencils have a wide range of colours and tones perfect for realism and all kinds of drawing!
Polycolors are super smooth, easy blending and great for building layers! The more layers you create with your colours the more depth and tones you create-perfect for realism drawing! I prefer oil based pencils as there is no thick waxy buildup and residue helping to save the quality of your paper!
